Oh, how I love May Day! I don't remember how old I was when first I learned of this tradition. Do you know it?
Get up early while the world is still asleep but the sun is beginning to brighten the sky. Gather flowers and herbs and greenery from wherever you can. Bundle them into a little package of color and tie it to the doorknob of your friend, the porch of your neighbor - or your daughter's bedroom door.
Every year, I try to do something a little bit different. This year, it was a tiny tin pail tied with seam binding ribbon. Some years, it is a cone or a canning jar or a basket. I just wish some of my dear friends lived close enough for me to reach their doorways as well.
I LOVE this post! I remember this tradition so well and feel as if no one has heard of this when I tell them what I used to do on May Day when I was little. But now I know that you, dear Judi, did this too! When I was 6 or 7, I used cones of paper and put in dandelions, violets, tulips and anything else that was blooming in our neighborhood. My sisters and I would hang them on a neighbor's front door (preferably a widow or an older couple nearby), ring the doorbell and run to a hiding place to watch the surprised look of the recipient when they opened the door.
I actually shared this tradition with my kindergartners years ago and they loved it, too. Maybe I'm particularly fond of May Day because I AM a May girl myself. Thanks for the post, Judi! Sara Elizabeth May
